The Russian passenger plane was carrying 214 Russian passengers and three Ukrainians, the Egyptian cabinet has said in a statement.
Out of the total 217 passengers, 138 were women, 62 men and 17 were children.
Egypt’s prime minister Ibrahim Mahlab is en route to the scene of the wreckage in the al-Hasanah area of Sinai. Mahlab has been in contact with the Russian ambassador this morning and extended his condolences, his office said.
“It is premature to decide the reasons of the crash and that the whole issue is now under investigation to clarify its reasons,” the cabinet office’s statement.
