Russia insists on conducting early presidential elections in Syria, Bloomberg said, citing a senior official in Moscow. Thus, Moscow wants to renew the mandate of the current Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and resist the US and its allies, demanding Assad’s resignation. These countries do not recognize the results of elections held in June 2014, in which Assad received 89% of votes.
According to the source, Assad must decide whether to go to the polls. As for the elections in the war-torn country, it should not become an obstacle.
Vice-Speaker of the Federation Council Ilyas Umakhanov told Bloomberg, that, in his view, «there is no alternative» to Assad in matters of «countering to [forbidden in Russia] «Islamic state» and saving the state of Syria». As for the early elections, he doesn’t know about this initiative, but Umahanov doesn’t rule out such a possibility.
