Assad could remain in power under the condition that he wouldn’t run for another term and give up controlling the Syrian security forces.

British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond conceded that the head of Syria Bashar al-Assad could remain within a few years as a «figurehead» of the country. This reports Reuters.

According to Hammond, if Assad’s power will help to resolve the conflict in the country, he could remain a president for a while, under the condition that he wouldn’t run for another term and give up controlling the Syrian security forces.

«If the price (end of the conflict in Syria — ed.) will be that we have to accept the fact that Assad will remain as nominal head of state for a while, then will I be worried, if it will last for three days, three weeks, three months, three years or even more? I don’t think that would be», — said the head of the British Foreign Office.

He added that this transitional period, there was no agreement with Moscow and Tehran.

«At the moment there is no agreement with the Russians and the Iranians, that Syria should have a transition period», — said Hammond.

Recall that Assad permitted his resignation as Syrian President.
